Oklahoma City Thunder Launch Title Defense with Nail-Biting Double Overtime Victory

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in action

The Thunder star joined the Thunder in 2019.

The Thunder's star player scored the winning baskets late in a second overtime period as the defending champions started their championship campaign with a 125-124 victory over the visiting Rockets.

The reigning MVP scored 35 points, featuring two clutch free throws with just 2.3 seconds left in double OT, giving the champions a positive start.

Houston's Alperun Sengun led all scorers with 39 points and also hit a personal-best five shots from beyond the arc.

But the Thunder's rookie, who added 28 points, was instrumental alongside the game's hero.

"Grit and defense," SGA commented of their showing. "We know that when we execute defensively we give ourselves a opportunity no matter what's going on—shots, missed attempts, fortune or misfortune. We did enough defence to get the win. We're pretty rusty, but it's a good start."

Before the tip-off, Oklahoma's title banner was raised at their arena, while the squad were presented with their championship rings.

The Thunder beat the Pacers in last season's best-of-seven NBA Finals. It was their maiden championship since the franchise relocated in 2008 to Oklahoma City from Seattle, who had claimed the 1979 title.

Indiana will have the chance to get some early revenge on Friday when they host the Thunder, while the Rockets return to action on the same day at the Detroit Pistons.

Elsewhere, a massive performance of 43 points, 12 boards and nine assists from the Slovenian star was not enough to prevent his current team the Lakers from falling to a 119-109 defeat against the Warriors.

Miami's star picked up 31 points and Stephen Curry added 23 points for the road team.

Los Angeles were missing the NBA's all-time leading scorer James as he is recovering from sciatica.
